Ayurveda, Pitta fire {water}

When I first began to study Ayurveda, a simple questionnaire told me instantly that I was of the Pitta dosha, or constitution.  Dark hair and eyes, pale ruddy skin, opinionated and strong-willed, this was all describing my physical and mental/emotional aspects to a T.  Like most of us, I found upon reading more that I was doing a lot of things to aggravate my imbalances.  I loved spicy food {still do} as well as stimulants and alcohol.  Oh well, some things one can only partially eliminate.  I love my wine and beer, but avoid spirits/liquor.  I avoid coffee on an empty stomach, having black tea with lots of milk and sugar in the mornings instead.  And I only occasionally go out for Thai food or something else with a lot of chili peppers.  But for the most part, reading about the three doshas has helped me understand how food can affect each of us differently.

Fire is the element of Pitta, although the texts say it is also water.  In my experience, although I have oily hair and skin, I am also dry due to being so firey.  So I do not address Pitta as needing to dry out but to moisten, as that is what my experience with this dosha has taught me.

Here are some quotes from Maharishi Ayurveda’s website regarding Pitta:

Pitta: Balanced Temper • Healthy Hair • Decreased Acid

Pitta governs all heat, metabolism and transformation in the mind and body. It controls how we digest foods, how we metabolize our sensory perceptions, and how we discriminate between right and wrong. Pitta governs the important digestive “Agnis” or fires of the body.

Do you need to balance Pitta?

Pitta dosha governs metabolism and transformation in the body. Answer these questions to see if you need to balance Pitta.

  1. Do you tend to be demanding or critical?
  2. Are you often frustrated, angry or intense?
  3. Is your skin ruddy and prone to rashes and eruptions?
  4. Are you often irritable or impatient?
  5. Is your hair prematurely gray or thinning?
  6. Do you wake up in the early hours and find it difficult to fall asleep again?
  7. Do you feel discomfort in hot weather?
  8. Are you a perfectionist?
  9. Do you experience hot flashes?
  10. Do you have excess stomach acid?
  11. Do you experience loose bowel movements?

If you answered yes to most of these questions, you need to balance Pitta.

I have created two tinctures that are specifically for decreasing Pitta.  One is the “Detox & Cleanse” and the other, “Cooling Tonic / Clearing Heat – Liver”.  Both of these, as well as “Boosting Yin / Nourishing Water – Kidneys”, contain cooling and detoxifying herbs that will ease the fire of high Pitta conditions.
